Associate Director and Associate Senior Instructional Professor

Matthew Nanes is Associate Director and Associate Senior Instructional Professor in the Committee on International Relations. His research focuses on security in a comparative context, including policing, insurgency, and violent extremism. He studies these topics using surveys and experiments in Southeast Asia and the Middle East, especially the Philippines, Indonesia, Iraq, and Israel. Nanes' book Policing for Peace: Institutions, Expectations, and Security was published by Cambridge University Press in 2021. His work also appears in the American Political Science Review, Journal of Politics, Science, and other top journals. He received his PhD in Political Science from UC San Diego in 2017. In 2017-18 he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Stanford University's Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law, and in 2024-25 he was a Visiting Scholar at the University of Michigan's Center for Political Studies. Before joining CIR in 2025, Nanes was Associate Professor of Political Science at Saint Louis University.
