Letter from the CIR Chair

Duncan Snidel

Welcome to the website of the Committee on International Relations at the University of Chicago. The purpose of this website is to introduce you to our program as well as to the unique intellectual environment that distinguishes the University of Chicago. If you care about big questions, and the different theories and approaches for studying them, this is the place for you. The currency at Chicago is ideas; we are world-famous for our intellectual intensity in the classroom, in our many workshops and in everyday interactions. If that's what you want, please consider joining us.

Students in the Committee on International Relations have access to faculty and course offerings from several academic divisions of the University. This means that every quarter we offer a wide array of courses on many different areas of IR. On top of that, students are encouraged to participate in the more than sixty Chicago workshops in the Humanities and Social Sciences, where they engage work-in-progress by faculty in their areas of research. Among other things, this website offers information about the courses we offer as well as the titles of recent MA papers to give you a sense of the diverse interests among our students.

If you're seeking more information about if this program is a good fit for your academic interests and expectations, as well as how to apply, we suggest you begin with our FAQ section for prospective students.

I hope we can convey to you our dedication to ideas and learning, as well as our emphasis on collaboration and exploration.

Again, welcome.
